Changes to intensive care services

  • What? The changes include the addition of new items, the amendment, deletion, consolidation and simplification of existing items, and consequential amendments to explanatory notes.
  • Why? MBS items for intensive care services will be changing to ensure that services are clinically appropriate and reflect modern clinical practice, encourage best practice and improve patient outcomes.
  • Who? These changes will affect specialists who carry out intensive care services, consumers claiming these services, private hospitals, and private health insurers.
  • When? The changes to intensive care services will be effective from 1 March 2020. These changes are subject to legislative process.
