Magnetic Resonance-guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS)

This page provides information on the introduction of new items for MRgFUS for the treatment of medically refractory essential tremor from 1 March 2024.

From 1 March 2024, five new Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) items will be introduced to provide MRgFUS for the treatment of medically refractory essential tremor. The five new items include two new Diagnostic Imaging Services Table (DIST) items (63019,63020) and three General Medical Services Table (GMST) items (40804, 40805 and 40806). These items are for the unilateral or bilateral treatment of medically refractory essential tremor.

The introduction of these items was supported the Medical Services Advisory Committee (MSAC) in March 2022 and approved by Government for funding in the 2023/24 Budget.
